Ya Sharr Mout
Film by Sabine Gisiger
Switzerland
Swiss-based Lebanese composer, guitar and oud virtuoso Mahmoud Turkmani is considered an innovator of classical Arabic
music. The starting point of his audio-visual performance, featuring six musicians and Swiss video artist and VJ Michael Spahr, consists of poems from «Sentimental Archives of a War in Lebanon» by
Lebanese lyricist Nadia Tuéni. How does language translate into music and film? Or as Turkmani puts it: «It is an attempt to turn words into images and music into language and to form a whole.»
The concert is preceded by a preview of «Ya Sharr Mout», a documentary film on Mahmout Turkmani by Swiss film maker Sabine Gisiger. (jwy)
