Nelisiwe Xaba

They Look at Me and That's All They Think / Plasticization

South Africa

Nelisiwe Xaba is one of the best-known African dancers and choreographers in Europe. Her unique solo works, created in close collaboration with the costume designer Strange Love, relentlessly portray South African society in a way that is critical but tempered with irony. At the festival she presents two of her performances: The solo «They Look at Me» refers, as does the piece by Latifa Laâbissi, to Sarah Baartman, «The Hottentot Venus». Baartman’s history is an allegory for Xaba’s own rise from Soweto to the Eurocentric world of contemporary art. «Plasticization» is an expressive examination of our materialistic world. (esc)
