Hotel Modern
Kamp
Netherlands
The Dutch theatre collective Hotel Modern invites you to Auschwitz, to the «Kamp». In just under an hour, we witness a normal day and a normal night at the concentration camp. The buildings of the meticulously recreated original camp are about knee-high, the little figures about the size of a finger. Around 3000 such homunculi live here, some wearing prisoner’s garb, others SS uniforms. The ones arriving by train wear street clothes, those in the gas chambers are naked. Three human figures silently move them individually or in groups through the camp’s daily routine; mini cameras project single scenes to the backdrop of the stage. This almost cute miniaturisation of everything makes its atrociousness even more evident. (kdi)
