What started off so beautifully ends in tragic, heartbreaking violence. Siti and the potter Setio love each other but the ruthless salesman Ludiro courts the beautiful Siti and tries to seduce her by all means at his disposal. Based on an episode from the Hindu epic Ramayana, the film «Opera Jawa» (2006) by Garin Nugroho tells the story of this passionate love triangle against the backdrop of Indonesia’s current violent tribal conflicts. Traditional Javanese dance and voice forms and Gamelan music are combined with contemporary choreographic and creative elements to make an expressive «requiem» full of emotion and sensuality. For the Theater Spektakel, Nugroho will elaborate a stage version of his film which will première on the lakeside stage. (esc)
